Blending fantasy and reality, this animated short is a bold inquiry into an as yet unresolved problem - the nature of human identity. When a scientist creates a machine that can make copies of physical objects, including humans, a number of ethical questions arise. Is the technique moral? What of its safety? A film by Oscar-winning filmmaker John Weldon (who also wrote the catchy banjo tune that punctuates the story's changing moods).

In one depot, two trams lived together. All day long, they traveled around the city, filling the streets with cheerful clatter, and they were happy. But in life, nothing lasts forever.

An impossible city is built up out of enormous rotating rings, steering the lives of its lonely inhabitants. New Babylon is a visual trip through an oppressive night in which contemporary, individualistic life is reflected in a circular metropole.

When two brothers steal a valuable heirloom from an elderly Japanese woman, they unknowingly awaken her demigod son, Osaru, who does not take kindly to thieves.

The events in the film take place in a remote place, far from the modern city and civilization, where the real and the unreal worlds meet. There, mysticism and reality are so intertwined that all kinds of miracles are expected. The people there live by their own unwritten laws. The punishments given to those who violate them are also completely different.

Paul Fierlinger's unique animation captures five individuals from diverse backgrounds as they describe their bouts with loneliness, its challenges and benefits.

A short animated feature accompanying the song of the same name by Kishi Bashi.
