A young man over-comes extreme poverty, a dysfunctional home, peer ridicule, and death in his family to embark on an epic journey that takes him to England on an island scholarship. There he is determined to overcome cultural shock, the bitter London cold and homesickness to return home to do right by his mother.

Roberto, a Peruvian boy in his teens, has moved to Montreal to  live with his father, Bob Montoya, and his new Canadian family.  While Bob tries to succeed in his new life as a small time "business man", the ties with his son will be marked by a quiet violence that seems to have followed them from their country of origin.

The eldest daughter is mute and married to an abusive husband. The younger daughter tries to pose as a rich university student to move up in life. The youngest son has a penchant for petty theft.

The story of Severino, a man who tries to escape the misery and the drought prevailing in the rural backcountry of the Northeast of Brazil. He heads for Recife, passing through desert and forest regions, expecting to find a better life.

A look at the lives of migratory farm workers, focusing on one family.

When a worker is found murdered on the construction side, the investigation swiftly turns from things criminal to the political circumstances surrounding the building itself. Widespread corruption and neglect by the builder himself are seen to have brought the situation about. Much of the movie is filmed using hand-held cameras, and the majority of the dialogue is in the difficult-to-understand and very slangy Spanish dialect of Mexico City's bricklayers.

Jimmy Park is visiting home for the first time in years and has nothing to show for his time living overseas in Seoul. But old tensions come to a head when he confronts his homophobic sister at a family dinner.
